Last Saturday, we sold our secondhand goods at the flea market near Konandai station. I chose this place from some flea markets by internet. Participation fee is cheaper than other places and many people are easy to access there. We paid \1,500 for a plot of 3.3㎡
The origin of the term flea market is uncertain, but some have observed that buyers and sellers may be as active as fleas, or that the original people and goods were infested. The original flea market may be held in the suburbs of Paris in France in the late 17th century.
We displayed many kinds of used and unwanted new goods on the ground sheet. They were China wares, clothes, kitchen-wares, rice cooker, and other electric appliances. These goods have been stored in our closet for long time and scarcely been used.
The most difficult point for sale was how much price should be set on. We didn’t want to make much money and wished these goods shall be re-used by other people. We didn’t want carry back many unsold goods. So we priced \50 for most of the china-ware and other goods are \100 to \200 except few things.
Major customers were middle-aged women and they knew the worth of goods quite well. Real bargained goods were sold quickly and they were very good at beat down the prices. One woman maybe from Asian country asked me to down the price \50 to \30. Of course I accepted her offer.
We sold off about 70% of total goods and the turnover of sale was \6,270. I thought flea market would reduce the waste and help for our eco-life. ]]>

Sept. ２６ marks the ５０th anniversary of the Isewan Typhoon of １９５９ that caused the heaviest damage. The mega-typhoon raised the sea-water level by up to ５ meters and the surging tides smashed into low areas. More than ５，０００ people died or went missing.
I’ve never forget the dreadful memory of my childhood when the Isewan typhoon attacked my home town in Aichi pref. I lived near the river with my parents, so high tide with heavy rain overflowed embankment.
The flooded water flowed into my house gradually up above the floor. So we had to draw out the drawers of chests one after another, from bottom one to upper one. The water inundated to the level of my knee position.
On the other hand, explosive storm was raging up above the roof. Our house began to creak by the force of wind. I thought our house might be blown away or collapsed. We felt it’s an end of this world. We couldn’t do anything but chanting Namuamidabutu to Buddha. Soon after then, whether our pray were heard to Buddha or not, the strong wind began to drop. We felt we were relieved.
The global warming will raise the sea level by up to ６０ centimeters by the end of this century. And the temperature on the sea surface that leads to several super-typhoons. Besides, the drawing of underground water is causing the ground to sink in the nation's three major urban arias around Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.
After ５０years Isewan Typhoon, We are still in the potential risk. ]]>

Last Sunday I participated in Shonan monthly marathon which was taken place in Shonan beach near Enoshima. In this hot season I was rather reluctant to run when my friend asked me to join the race. But I couldn’t refuse his temptation of drinking beer after the race.
This monthly marathon rally has started 32 years ago on the concept of supporting healthy running life. Continuation and finishing the course are this marathon’s motto. So there is no award for fast runner. Instead when we have run certain times as ５, １０, ２０, ･･up to ２００ times, many kinds of memorial goods are awarded to us.
When I got to the meeting place there were many runners in line for application. I paid \１３００ including first registration fee and had a race number １９１９５, that means the total registered number of this society. There were many courses from １km to １０km. I took １０km race which start Kugenuma and return back at the Chigasaki beach turning point.
At ９ am we started Kugenuma-kaigan with ６００ runners going along narrow cycling road to Chigasaki-kaigan. It’s hot sunny day and there were no shade of trees. We were exposed in sun shine all the way. When I’d got back to finish I was quite exhausted.
After finishing the race, I and my friend waited our members at reunion place. But they did not come back. Long later we were noticed that one of our members fell down after finished. She suffered from hyperthermia (熱中症) and taken to hospital. She might run too hard without drinking water on the way or had bad physical condition. ]]>

Last August I mostly stayed in my house avoiding hot outside. So my wife rent many rental DVDs at video shop. Among in those rental DVDs, I happen to watch famous Korean love drama “Winter sonata” that was broadcasted on NHK TV about ５ years ago.
That drama so called Fuyu-sona brought a sensational boom in Japan, especially among middle-aged women. But I didn’t have any interest at that time. I thought it’s just a soap opera women like to watch.
Fuyu-sona DVD is consisted of 7 disks that contained 20 sub-stories. As the drama proceeding further, we couldn’t stop watching. After all we enjoyed them all in two days. Elegant heroin acted by Choi Ji Woo and her faithful fiancé Park Yong Ha played especially well. Story developed very attractively exciting us what happens next.
This Fuyu-sona drama has triggered the Korean wave in Japan.This phenomenon was the thanks to the then Korean president Kim Dae Jung who have opened culture exchange between Japan and Korea.
Last month he has died at the age of 85. He was the first South Korean president to visit North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize that year. Before becoming president he endured persistent suppression by the then South Korean government, including imprisonment, and was sentenced to death on treason charges. His courageous and constant effort to make his country democracy was the great achievement.
He really ended his dramatic life. If his life story would be produced to movie I’d like to see it by all means. ]]>

Last Sunday I harvested potatoes in my farmland. It was a good harvest amounted about 20 kg in a small plot. I planted Kitaakari species which is good for mash potato and croquette.
We boiled fresh potatoes right away and ate hot potatoes with several dressings, mayonnaise, salt, soy-sauce, ketchup, Worcester sauce. Every dressing fit well and very delicious.
Potatoes originally came from Andes highland in South America, to Europe in 16 century then taken into Japan via Djakarta port. Japanese word Jagaimo came from Jagatara which was the old name of Djakarta in Indonesia. We sometimes call them Bareisho, This word came from Chinese pronunciation (馬鈴薯mǎlíngshǔ).
In Japan 82 species has been registered. Danshaku-imo is named after Duke Kawada who brought them from England to Japan in Meiji era and mainly planted in east Japan. Mei-queen was imported from England in Taisho era and mainly favored in west Japan. Mei-queen is hard to boil-collapsing, so it’s good for curry and stew.
When they were first imported in Europe, potato was called “devill’s product” because of its looks and no record in Bible. But they endures cold climate and barren land. So when famine occurred in Europe in 17 century, north European countries began to cultivate potatoes and have been influenced their food culture.
In North Korea, when food shortage occurred, then government proposed planting potatoes in late1990’s. Kim Jon Ill said “potato is same as white rice”. This seemed to help his people a little from famine. ]]>

尾瀬ハイキング 尾瀬ハイキング ６月５日 「夏が来れば思い出す･･･」で馴染みの水芭蕉を見ようと、尾瀬バスツアーに友人夫妻を誘い参加した。若い頃は三平峠、金精峠など、様々なルートから度々、尾瀬に行ったが、水芭蕉の咲く頃は初めてである。今回はミニバスで鳩待峠まで入り、山の鼻から尾瀬ヶ原へ入るコースである。朝７時に横浜駅をバスが出発した時は雨が降っていたが、尾瀬は曇り空であった。鳩待から下る一方で木
